Never lose your value

Lamentations  4:1 How is the gold become dim! how is the most fine gold changed! the stones of the sanctuary are poured out in the top of every street.

The Book of Lamentations in itself is a book that vividly portrays the sorrow and devastation experienced by the people of Israel. Lamentations 4:1 speaks to us about the loss of value and purity, using the imagery of dimmed gold and scattered holy stones. This verse is not just a historical lament but a spiritual lesson for us. It urges us to never lose our value, no matter the circumstances.

1. Understanding Our Value:
The verse starts with, “How the gold has grown dim, how the pure gold is changed!” Gold, in its pure form, is valuable, precious, and unchanging. This gold represents not just material wealth but also our spiritual and moral integrity. In God’s eyes, each of us is like pure gold, created with purpose, worth, and beauty.

2. Recognizing the Sources of Dimness:
The dimming of gold signifies corruption and decay. This can happen due to external pressures or internal compromises. In our lives, we face many challenges that can dim our spiritual shines—temptations, sin, discouragement, and the cares of this world. The purity of our faith and character can be tarnished if we allow these influences to overshadow our true nature.

3. The Consequences of Scattering:
The verse continues, “The holy stones lie scattered at the head of every street.” Holy stones symbolise what is sacred and set apart for God’s purposes. When these stones are scattered, they lose their intended place and purpose. Also, when we stray from God’s path, our lives can become disordered. We may lose our sense of direction and purpose, leading to a feeling of being lost and undervalued.

4. Restoring Our Shine:
But all is not lost. Just as gold can be refined and restored, so can our lives. Returning to God in repentance and faith is the first step to reclaiming our value. God is a master refiner who purifies and restores. Malachi 3:3 says, “He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver.” God can restore our purity and brilliance if we submit ourselves to His refining process.

5. Keeping Our Value Intact:
To maintain our value, we must remain steadfast in our faith and commitment to God. This involves regular self-examination, prayer, and aligning our lives with God’s word. Ephesians 5:15-16 advises us, “Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.” By living wisely and purposefully, we guard against the dimming influences of the world.

In conclusion, let us remember that our value in God’s sight is immense. We are more precious than gold and more significant than the holy stones. No matter how the trials of life may try to dim our shine or scatter our purpose, we must hold fast to the truth that in God, we can be restored and refined.

God bless you.
